WAGES

Wage rates will correspond to the job class assigned to a student upon initial hiring and he/she will be paid the specific wage rate corresponding to the job class indicated on the hiring form.

WAGE LEVELS

  • Level I. Few special skills with little or no previous training or work experience is required for Level I jobs. A minimum amount of training is necessary to prepare the employee for work. Employment is generally well supervised and jobs are often of a routine nature that requires little decision-making.
  • Level II. Level II positions usually require some previous training, experience, or knowledge, as well as some mechanical ability, manual dexterity, or mental activity. The work performed is generally supervised.
  • Level III. Previous training or experience, independent judgment, and considerable mental activity are generally required for Level III jobs. Some college education or comparable experience is often necessary. The work may include a high level of responsibility.
  • Level IV. Jobs in this level require a high degree of mental activity and independent judgment, and may require a degree of decision-making. Some college education or comparable experience is necessary, and may include a high level of responsibility.


STIPENDS/LUMP SUM

When student employees, in the Student Aid Program, will receive a stipend/lump sum rather than an hourly wage, the following procedures and requirements are applicable:

  • Approval to pay a stipend/lump sum instead of an hourly wage must be granted by the supervisor and the unit head before the employee begins work.
  • The monthly stipend/lump sum amount approved by both supervisor and the unit head is applicable only if the work results in a pre-defined, identifiable product, such as an illustration or cover design for an administrative office, or other specific service to the University community.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Below is a listing of job descriptions used throughout the University to determine student employee duties and responsibilities.

Artist-Illustrator

Employs skills in drawing, arranging, designing, and lettering. Prepares and sets up displays. May do illustrations, charts, models or layouts. Maintains equipment and supplies.

Athletic Aide

Sets up and maintains facilities and equipment. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Bookkeeper

Maintains records, handles billing, operates office machines and does general office work. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Building/Grounds Aide

Maintains outdoor University areas. Duties may include trimming shrubbery, cutting, watering, and maintaining the lawns, snow and leaf removal, moving furniture and equipment. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Cashier

Duties may include receiving money, making change, issuing receipts and accounting for funds received. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Child Care Center

Cares for young children under general supervision. Conducts group and play activities, prepares children's snacks and maintains play equipment and supplies. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Clerk

Performs office duties of a generally routine nature. May include reception, filing, sorting, maintaining records, disseminating information and operating office machines and equipment. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Clerk-Typist

Performs office duties of generally routine nature. May include reception, filing, sorting, maintaining records, disseminating information, operating office machines and equipment and typing. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Community Service Aide

Routine or general duties as an aide in the following areas: program development, social work, recreation, mental health, youth programming, tutoring and group counseling. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Commuter Center Aide

Assists food service personnel in maintenance of food service areas. Duties may include busing dishes, cleaning tables, etc., and related tasks as assigned. Assists building service personnel in preparation of rooms in Commuter Center areas for meetings and conferences, and related tasks as assigned. Assists vending employees in stocking storerooms and machines, including access to vending machine monies. Performs related tasks as assigned. Assists evening and weekend supervisor with landscaping maintenance, and preparations for special conferences. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Computer Assistant

May operate or assist in the operation of computers or data processing equipment. May operate or maintain computers or data processing equipment. May assist other students with computer programming problems. May assist in the proctoring and grading of tests, recording-keeping, and distribution of instructional materials. May require previous training or experience, and programming experience.

Crafts Worker

Builds, constructs, forms, or creates using artistic skill, manual dexterity, handicraft tools or equipment. Works with wood, glass, clay, metals, fabrics, etc. Helps with care maintenance of equipment and materials. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Data Entry Clerk

Operates keyboard or other data entry device to enter data into computer or onto magnetic tape or disk for subsequent entry. Enters alphabetic, numeric, or symbolic data from source documents into computer using data entry device such as keyboard or optical scanner and follows format displayed on screen. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Departmental Aide

Includes a variety of jobs that are routine in nature. The duties are non-clerical, but necessary to the operation of a department, office, or activity, either academically related or operational. Bilingual capability may be required. May require driver's license, previous training or experience.

Duplicating Service Aide

Assists with paper-cutting, binding, collating, and delivery of materials. May be required to maintain copy machines (cleaning, delivering and loading paper, refilling toner cartridges.) May also be required to change copy machine locks, take monthly readings, and maintain ledger. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Laboratory Aide

Includes all positions involving cleaning and care of laboratory apparatus, and does not require particular scientific training. May assist in the general care of specimens. Assists with all laboratory duties of a routine nature. Bilingual capability may be required. May be required to assemble, maintain, and operate laboratory or experimental equipment, adjusting and repairing where necessary. May be required to assist instructors, and instruct students. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Learning Services Aide

Delivers and sets up audio-visual, audio-recording, photography, film, graphic arts and/or television equipment. May also be required to operate audio-visual equipment, film and photography equipment, as well as audio-recording equipment. May perform photographic procedures (copy-stand shooting; color, and black and white film processing; printing; preparation of chemicals.) May be required to perform film production procedures (assisting in production scheduling, sound camera and lighting set-ups, editing, and mixing.) More advanced students may provide more sophisticated services as assigned.

Library Assistant

Duties assigned are generally of a routine nature, and include the following: shelf reading, shelving, paging, sorting, and/or simple filing, working at circulation or reserve desks, packing and unwrapping books, and general clerical tasks including typing. Duties may include checking for materials at the various library computer terminals, and searching for catalog cards.

Mail Clerk

Sorts, processes, and issues mail supplies and materials. May pick up, deliver, load and unload mail. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Messenger-Delivery Clerk

Delivers a wide variety of supplies, equipment, products and materials to facilitate the delivery needs among offices of University departments. Loads and unloads supplies and equipment. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Pool Supervisor

Serves as lifeguard, enforces policies and rules in the swimming area. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Receptionist

Receives and assists visitors, supplies information, answers the telephone and assists with miscellaneous clerical work. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Registration/Records Aide

Assists with the general arrangement and operation of registering students for NEIU classes. Transports, delivers and maintains supplies, equipment, and materials, directs registering students, checks and distributes forms, schedules, etc. Assignment involves working with confidential information and requires employees in these classifications to maintain confidentiality of records and information. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Research Aide

Assists in research activities, and may conduct research activities under general supervision. Prepares and maintains related equipment, keeps records, writes reports, and collects data. Duties may involve evaluation and independent judgment. Previous training and experience may be required. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Security Aide

Provides security measures through surveillance, and reports any unusual activity to security officers. May require previous training and experience. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Sports Official

Officiates at, or supervises intramural sports or activities. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Sports Supervisor

Responsible for supervision of intramural games, activities, and sports officials. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Stage Technician

Duties may include construction of stage settings, making of costumes, stage lighting, and related tasks as assigned under the supervision of the technical director of theater. May be required to assist the technical director of theater, and accept responsibility for some supervision of other students in the construction of stage settings, stage lighting, etc.

Statistical Aide

Records, computes, graphs and charts data and statistics. Assembles and codes data and arranges statistical analyses. Maintains files and records, and may assist in clerical tasks. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Student Activities Aide

Duties may include ushering, loading or unloading instruments and equipment for performances, box office management, publicity, promotional work, and related tasks as assigned.

Switchboard Operator

Receives and/or routes telephone calls. Supplies information, maintains records, assists with general clerical tasks, and operates necessary equipment. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Teaching Aide

May be required to assist instructors in classes, teaching elementary labs, assisting in the development of new demonstrations and experiments, and assisting in research labs. Requires training, and may require experience. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Tutor

Teaches individuals on specific subject matter. Previous training and experience may be required. Performs related tasks as assigned.
