S6: TERMINATION
6/2/98

Fiscal Agent Handbook Index | Student Employment Index

Student employees may be terminated for various reasons. For example: at the request of the supervisor because of poor performance or attendance, or at the request of the Financial Aid office or Student Employment when awarded funds have been earned.

If a student employee is to be terminated by Student Employment, the department supervisor, the Payroll office and the student will be notified in writing by the Student Employment office or the Financial Aid office.

Termination due to poor performance/attendance:

If you feel that your student employee is not performing his/her duties satisfactorily, you may request that the student be terminated after you have followed the procedure outlined below:

1. Discuss the problem(s) with the student and define what the student needs to do to improve. Establish time for you to meet with the student to discuss his/her progress. 2. If the student's performance has not improved by the time of your second meeting, then again set forth the requirements of the job and inform the student that if the objectives are not met, his/her employment will be terminated. Establish a date by which a decision will be made about the student's continued employment. 3. Document the above conversations by sending the student a memo outlining your expectations and the time table for review of the student's progress. A copy should also be sent to the Student Employment office. 4. If the student's attendance and/or performance has not improved to an acceptable level by the date established in step 2, you should prepare a Student Employee Change of Status Form requesting termination of the student's employment and submit the form to the Student Employment office.
