S2: FEDERAL WORK STUDY PROGRAM
6/2/98

Fiscal Agent Handbook Index | Student Employment Index

The Federal Work Study (FWS) program is the primary source of student employment.

ELIGIBILITY

Student Aid Reports (SAR) should be submitted to the Financial Aid Office by April 1 for Summer II, Fall and Spring semester's consideration. Students whose applications are received past this date will be considered for whatever student financial aid funds are remaining. The applications that generate the SAR are available January 1.

The student must:

A. complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) designating NEIU to receive the information;

B. submit the SAR to the Financial Aid Office regardless of eligibility. The SAR is sent directly to the student's home, not to NEIU;

C. submit a Northeastern (NEIU) Financial Aid Application to the Financial Aid Office;

When the SAR and the NEIU Financial Aid Application are on file in the Financial Aid Office, the documents will be evaluated to determine eligibility for financial aid.

If the student is evaluated by the Financial Aid Office as eligible for the FWS, he/she will be instructed to report to the office of Student Employment for an interview.

APPLICATION RENEWAL

FWS students must renew their eligibility each fiscal year by submitting a new application to the Federal Student Aid Program following the procedure previously outlined. Applications for the next fiscal year are available January 1.

EXCEEDING A STUDENT'S FINANCIAL NEED

The referral form will state the total earnings allowed for each semester, so the supervisor can average the number of hours per week a student may work. If the student works more than the average hours per week, the student will use up his/her allotted funds before the end of the semester and will be terminated before the end of the semester.

Federal work study awards are based on full time enrollment. If the employee enrolls for less than twelve credit hours, the award may change.

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS

Summer II Semester: Students working on FWS must be enrolled for a minimum of three credit hours during the Summer II semester.

Fall & Spring Semesters: Students working on FWS must be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours per fall and spring semesters.

Summer IA Semester: Non-enrolled FWS students are NOT permitted to work under any conditions. Before a student can work during the Summer I session, he/she must contact the Financial Aid Office to determine eligibility.

Note: Federal work-study is awarded as part of the students' financial aid package. Students interested in working during any Summer term should contact the Financial Aid Office to determine eligibility.

ACADEMIC PROGRESS REQUIREMENT

All students employed by the University are expected to remain in good academic standing and make satisfactory progress toward completion of his/her course of study. Students employed by the FWS program should check with the Financial Aid Office for further information regarding the policy regulating academic progress of financial aid recipients.
