At Northeastern Illinois University, Student Employment focuses on benefiting the student. Programming is directed at providing students with financial assistance and useful work experience. University departments/units are also provided with qualified part-time employees.
We believe:
The policy of Northeastern Illinois University is that discrimination against an individual for reasons of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, disability, sex, or age is prohibited.
The staff of the office of Student Employment reaffirms
Northeastern's commitment and efforts to provide equal employment opportunities
as prescribed by federal and state laws.
STUDENT EMPLOYMENT GUIDELINES
Only Northeastern students are eligible to be employed by the programs discussed in this section of the handbook. Each program has specific enrollment requirements which may vary each semester.
Student employees may be employed simultaneously by both the Student Aide Program (SAP) and the Federal Work Study Program (FWS), but may not work more than forty hours in a two week pay period when classes are in session.
Student employees may not be employed in a non student position on campus and regular University employees may not be employed in a student employee position.
A. Wages
Wages will be determined by the hiring department. Student wages may be viewed in section S8: Pay Plan, but may change at any time. Please contact the student employment office if you have questions about current wages.
B. Maximum Hours
When classes are in session, students are limited to working no more than forty hours in a two week pay period. When classes are not in session, student employees may work up to forty hours per week.
FWS students' supervisors must give careful attention to determining with the student the appropriate number of hours to be worked each week. The departmental/unit budget and the individual student's award for FWS should be used as guidelines.
At no time are student employees to work more than eight hours in one day or forty hours in one week. University policy prohibits overtime for student employees.
C. Sick/Vacation Leave and Holidays
Student employees are not paid for sick days, vacation days, or official University holidays. However, occasions do arise (such as attending to daily needs of animals in University laboratories) when students may agree to appear for work on holidays or during vacations. If the holiday/vacation is in the middle of the semester and the student is in the FWS program, the hours worked would reduce the hours available for the remainder of the semester because there are limits on what these employees can earn.
D. Graduating Students
Students who have completed graduation requirements
during a given semester must stop working on the published end-of-semester
date, unless they intend to be enrolled for the subsequent semester, and
in the case of federal work study, students have an award for the semester
following the completion of said graduation requirements. Permission to
continue on the FWS program must be authorized by the Financial Aid Office.
