U.S. and World Premieres
Chicago - The Ensemble Español Center for Spanish Dance & Music, Dame Libby Komaiko, founder and artistic director, honors their 34th anniversary with the summer's "Must See" event, the American Spanish Dance Festival. The cast of 40 sensational dancers, singers, musicians, and international guest artists bring the magic of Spain to Chicago through their exciting fusion of traditional, classical, folkloric, Flamenco, and dramatic theatrical productions. The Festival features gala concerts with U.S. and world premiers, a comprehensive series of 47 master classes and workshops in the neoclassical, clásico Español, regional/folkloric and Flamenco styles of dance, music, vocals, guitar, and percussion available for undergraduate and graduate course credit or non-credit, Sculpture exhibits, Flamenco Music Concert & films.

In 1979, Dance Magazine predicted Libby Komaiko was destined for greatness. In 1983, Juan Carlos I, King of Spain, awarded Komaiko the highest honor Spain bestows upon foreign nationals. She received the "Lazo de Dama de la Orden de Isabel La Catolica" (Ribbon of the Dame), in recognition of her promotion of the artistic, cultural and educational values of the Spanish traditions of music and dance throughout the U.S.

The Ensemble continues to thrive as America's leaders and innovators in the artistic creation, preservation and presentation of Spain's dance and musical traditions. Ensemble Español is the international Spanish dance company and center, in-residence at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago.
