Mission

The Chicago Teachers’ Center is an academic unit within the College of Education at Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, Illinois. The mission of the Center is to improve urban education through collaborative partnerships between the College of Education, schools, community agencies, and businesses. The Center challenges the educational system to better serve diverse cultural and ethnic populations by creating model programs for teachers and students. Systemic and structural educational change is generated by:

  • Collaborating with teachers in the field on program development and research
  • Fostering human relationships based on mutual trust and respect
  • Introducing innovations and alternative paradigms
  • Integrating theory and practice
  • Conducting action research
  • Offering opportunities for professors and school teachers to work together as colleagues
  • Creating school communities and teams in which teachers and learners support one another through critical thinking, non-judgmental inquiry, and reflective dialogue.

We believe that this process of educational change will better prepare students to help build a more just and democratic society.
