Required textbook: Damon, W. (1983). Social and personality development: Infancy through adolescence. New York: W. W. Norton.
Additional readings will be required and available on Reserve in the
library.
Course requirements (and their points):
PARTICIPATION AND CLASS ASSIGNMENTS (25 pts.): Attendance and participation is mandatory. "Homework" will be assigned during class and will be due at the beginning of the next class unless otherwise stated.
EXAMS: Two short essay exams (25 pts. each). The exams will require
that the student integrate and apply the material from the class. There
will no make-up exams, unless permission has been given by the instructor
before the date and time of the scheduled exam. Permission to take a make-up
exam will be given only under extreme circumstances.
PAPER: The topics for the paper will be chosen/assigned in class.
Writing the paper will be a four part process. 1) Reference list with short
summaries of each article/book (10 pts), 2) Outline (10 pts.), 3) Paper
(30 pts.), 4) Revision (can earn those pints previously deducted from the
paper).
The paper should be computer generated, APA style, 15 pages long, with
15 references. Papers will be graded based on quality of content, grammar
and presentation, and adherence to APA guidelines. Each aspect of the
paper is due at the beginning of class on the date noted in the following
schedule. Late summaries, outlines, and papers will be accepted up to two
days late but will be marked down two points. After that date, nothing
will be accepted. Extensions will be given only for extreme circumstances
and must be requested before the due date if it is to earn full credit.
PRESENTATION: A lottery will be held to determine the order in
which the students will present their papers. The presentations will be
graded based on the distribution of an abstract to the class, quality of
content, presentation style, length of presentation (10-15 minutes), and
the use of audio-visual aids (25 pts.). The presentations will be evaluated
by the instructor as well as the other students. The student evaluations
will be taken into consideration during the grading of the presentation.
EXTRA CREDIT: There are two forms of extra credit. 1) Participate
as a subject in one or two research projects currently being conducted
by NEIU faculty or students (2 pts. each), and 2) Individualized extra
credit - see instructor after the second week of class for more information
(4 pts.).
Papers and exams not picked up will be kept for one term only.
